What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy has been proven to be highly effective in treating trauma and other psychological conditions. This therapy approach offers rapid resolution with a stronger sense of empowerment, Processing even the most difficult memories can be dealt with in a much shorter time compared to traditional therapy. EMDR therapy is a powerful technique that can rapidly shift you into a state of health. EMDR addresses the psychological and physical symptoms stemming from adverse life experiences. EMDR is not just for trauma, it is also used for performance enhancement to excel in areas of athletics, business, and relationships. This treatment, while extremely effective, is an 8-phase process.

The first clinical trial investigating EMDR was in 1989. Dozens of clinical trials since EMDR's development show this technique is effective and can help a person faster than many other methods. Your therapist will assess if this is the right treatment for you, and will walk with you through this process.

How does EMDR work?

When trauma occurs, the brain quickly links up a bunch of information and sometimes, the traumatic information gets stored incorrectly. This means that the traumatic events can be distressing, intrusive and feel like they are happening right now. This also causes numerous symptoms and patterns of behaviour that disrupt you from living your best life. This could be anxiety, depression, addictions, or phobias to name a few.

EMDR understands that trauma is stored in the body, so we use a process called bilateral stimulation which incorporates alternating eye movements, taps or using calming hand buzzers while recalling the events in a safe and guided process. The therapist guides the client in helping your brain access adaptive information, reprocess the events, and strengthen healthy ways to cope and think. EMDR can assist your brain to return to optimal health and vitality. It can replace old, distorted thinking into new, liberating ways of seeing yourself, the world and others. EMDR can give you relief from intrusive thoughts and memories.

What is intensive therapy?

One of the most effective forms of EMDR therapy is the intensive protocol, which involves multiple daily sessions over a period of days or longer sessions than mainstream therapy practices. EMDR intensives are personalized treatment plans that allow you to get immediate treatment by giving you faster access to premium spots, and are designed to support your preferred schedule and timeline for your treatment goals. EMDR intensive therapy allows clients to complete months' worth of treatment in just a few days. For individuals who have limited time and resources for traditional weekly therapy, the intensive approach offers a faster, more efficient path towards healing. With traditional therapy, clients must schedule sessions around their busy work or family schedules, which can lead to missed appointments or gaps in treatment. In an intensive program, clients are able to keep their focus solely on treatment, thereby reducing disruptions that can impede progress. EMDR intensives provide a powerful experience of transformation and a path toward healing for individuals struggling with trauma and related conditions. This therapy approach offers rapid resolution with a stronger sense of empowerment, helping clients to create a fulfilling life beyond the confines of their past trauma.

What does the research say?

Intensive application of trauma-focused therapy seems to be well tolerated in patients with PTSD, enabling faster symptom reduction with similar, or even better, results, while reducing the risk that patients drop out prematurely. Learn more here and here.
